Senate Finance Committee Seeks New Disclosure Requirement for Lobbyists on Tariff Issues

Senate Finance Committee Chairman Max Baucus (D-MT) and Ranking Member Charles Grassley (R-IA) will wait to move forward with a call for colleagues to introduce various individual tariff bills until approval of a new requirement for transparency from lobbyists on tariff issues.

The new disclosure procedure will require lobbyists to use a new filing code "TAR-Tariff (Miscellaneous Tariff Bills)" when reporting lobbying activity related to any tariff issues. For any other trade-related issues, filers will continue to use the TRD code in making disclosures.

The new requirement is intended to ensure transparency on all lobbying activities relative to efforts on behalf of proposed temporary duty suspensions or other tariff change requests. Once approved, the new disclosure procedure will be required for all individual tariff bills to be proposed for inclusion in the Miscellaneous Tariff Bill.

(For the text of the proposed addition of "TAR" to the lobby issue codes go to http://www.senate.gov/legislative/Public_Disclosure/tar.htm.).
