Obama's Earlier Round of Trade Protectionism
Earlier in his term, Obama ignited a trade dispute with another of our best trading partners, Mexico, over his decision in March 2009 to cancel a successful 2007 pilot program. The program, initiated pursuant to the North American Free Trade Agreement, had allowed Mexican truckers to travel into the United States. Obama's canceling the program appeared to many observers to be done primarily to please the U.S. labor unions who opposed it.
The Mexican government strongly opposed the President's action, and retaliated by imposing tariffs on dozens of U.S. products ranging from fruit and wine to washing machines.
